Hy-Vee recalls 2 cream cheese products due to salmonella risk

An alarming announcement has been made: a recall is set for two types of Hy-Vee cream cheese over fears of possible salmonella contamination. The supermarket chain disclosed that their bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream snack mix could also be affected by the same issue. These steps were taken after Hy-Vee was informed about the potential salmonella threat by the products’ third-party manufacturers, as revealed in a statement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The cream cheese spreads that have been recalled include an eight-ounce Hy-Vee whipped cream cheese spread with an expiry date of either Aug. 7 or Aug. 14, and a 12-ounce Hy-Vee cream cheese spread expiring on Sept. 1. Moreover, four-ounce packages of the Hy-Vee to-go Cookies & Cream mix, and 16-ounce packages of Hy-Vee Cookies & Cream Mix have also been recalled due to certain use-by dates.

Hy-Vee’s spokesperson assured that the only reason behind these two recalls is that two of their suppliers had also issued recalls for their nationwide products. He mentioned that the candy item shared a link with the public Palmer Candy recall that was announced a day before.

The Palmer Candy recall, applicable to confectionery products available via various retailers, was initiated after the company was informed about the risk of salmonella contamination from a possibly contaminated ingredient by its liquid coating supplier, as per the FDA.

Hy-Vee has been abundantly cautious in this issue, assuring that the cream cheese spreads and the snack mix that came under the recall have not yet been linked to any illnesses or unexpected reactions. They emphasized that such preventive measures were taken to ensure their consumers’ safety.

Salmonella can lead to temporary stomach problems and fever in healthy individuals. There can be “serious and sometimes deadly infections” for the young, elderly, or those with a weakened immunity system, warns the FDA.

The supermarket chain strongly recommends consumers having the recalled products to dispose of them or return them for a refund. In particular, the FDA stated that the affected items had been distributed to Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drugstore, and Dollar Fresh Market venues, including Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores across eight states, which include Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Hy-Vee has voluntarily removed all the affected items from its stores. It was also clarified that the recall didn’t impact any other cream cheese options sold by them or other bulk-packaged items for that matter.

Consumers who have acquired the product are advised to either dispose of it or return it to their nearest Hy-Vee store for a complete refund.
